Photography frames and fixes
This can be enabling – seeing things through a detail, microcosmic part for whole – synechdoche – the oligopticon, where macro ladidary detail ironically offers more than the wide angle or panorama (contrast the panopticon). The world in a grain of sand.
And disabling – frames restrict and compress, and fixity can deny the dynamic of human creativity, reducing to a stock cliché or ideology.
One way I have always favored of exploiting this tension is rephotography – photographs of photographs (of photographs …) – that emphasizes the making and the materiality of photo-work.
Here’s a slideshow that plays on this. It looks best at full screen HD.
