I bought the Thomas the Tank Engine stories for my Ben today. The series does very well in the US and plays heavily on something I thought quite unique to the UK – not just steam trains, but the British train spotting phenomenon and fascination with rural English branch lines.

In the movies – “The Titfield Thunderbolt”, a 1952 Ealing Studios comedy, plays with a similar sentimentality for times soon to be lost – and again uses technicolor very pointedly.
