Ancient Greece and Rome

Athena-Nike

Fruits of empire – the temple of Athena Nike on the Acropolis in Athens (1977 – memories of my first visit)

It started with my schooling – Latin and Greek in the most traditional of curricula imaginable at Royal Grammar School Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in the north east of England. Classical antiquity has been a focus in my academic career ever since, with studies in ancient ceramics, making and consuming, connoisseurship, art history and semiotics, and, above all, exploring body politic and experiences of urban dwelling.

Since 2010 I have been part of the team excavating Vinovium, the town and outpost at the edge of the Roman empire in the north.
